Splashing our Way Through Hue, Part 1

The morning got off to a good start with a large breakfast buffet at the hotel.

After this, our tour guide Danny, along with our driver, Mr. D, picked us up and took us to our first stop, the Thien Mu pagoda, meaning heavenly lady.

There is much to learn

We had some time to kill before flying out to Hue, so we paid a visit to the Temple of Literature near Old Hanoi. This was the home of scholars over many centuries of those studying Confucianism from its open in 1076 until 1779.

Dancing on Water

Today was mostly a transit day, heading back from the cruise ship and back to Hanoi. Before they took us back to Hanoi, we stopped by Yen Duc Village for the water puppet show.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t understand most of it, but from the small blurbs they prefaced each number with, they talked about their agricultural life, new life, and other aspects of rural life.

Pelvic Thrusting Saves the Day

Having a slow start to the vacation has helped combat jet lag so much. We finally slept decently, if not in long spurts. Our morning started with tai chi, which definitely helped after yesterday’s kayaking adventures. This was followed by a tasty breakfast.

We had the option of pho (beef/chicken) or eggs and toast. I guess I looked hungry as I was offered both.

Merrily We Row

Day two had us up and at ’em early. Turns out neither of us slept well. The hotel provided a tasty breakfast, including more dragonfruit. Various noodles, greens, and meats were on tap, along with some tasty passion fruit juice.

Playing Frogger

Nothing refreshes you like a solid sleep in a plane seat. Ok, I couldn’t type that with a straight face. Both of us are still. If you get a chance to watch a movie called Fat Choi Spirit, do it. I haven’t laughed that hard at a movie in a long time. Even better, we got to enjoy Thanksgiving at 38,000 feet.

And we’re off!

Welcome to the inaugural post on this very hastily slapped together travel blog. I hope that you, dear visitor, enjoy your time here. For this first trip here, my travel companion and I will be visiting Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia.

This trip is also my first attempt to avoid checking bags and traveling light. Starting off with a Tortuga Outbreaker pack, which I’m already seeing is great for domestic trips, but might not be the best in dealing with international carry-on weight limits. More on this bag in another post.

Along with that, got a Neat Pack as my “personal item” and my day bag. While it might be small, it’s certainly no slouch for how much it can hold so far.

In airport news, we decided to fly on Thanksgiving eve, and fortunately security for international was pretty chill. Pre-check/Global Entry has already paid off, entire time through security took 45 seconds. This I could get used to.

For now, we will be chilling at the airport, we now have three hours to kill. See you on the other side. Here’s one of many art installations at SFO.
